URBAN REGENERATION STRATEGIES FOR COR OF SHANTOU

The “petit park” area has a unique continuity of early 20th century urban architecture and arcades for China. In a city that has largely lost it’s pedestrian scale and orientation, this regeneration provides an alternative urban development strategy. The proposal seeks to revitalize the current fabric when possible and to re-insert a 24 hour use to the partially abandoned district. Live work units a top shops would be complemented by selectively removing inappropriate or dilapidated buildings for the creation of pocket parks. One of the strategic options was to create an iconic hotel structure that would mark the rebirth of the district.
